Puerto Vallarta's equestrian corridor stretches from the Sierra Madre foothills to the tidal flats of Banderas Bay, a sixty-kilometer arc where horses have carried cargo, tourists, and tradition since the village numbered fewer than a thousand souls.
Before the Malecón was paved or the hotel zone broke ground, ranchers drove cattle down dirt tracks that are now trailheads for horseback riding Puerto Vallarta beach circuits, their routes unchanged but their purpose reimagined.
The landscape divides into two rideable zones. Guides carry first-aid kits, satellite phones, and spare tack; horses are rotated every three hours to prevent overheating. The Sierra Madre routes incorporate swim stops at natural pools—riders dismount, horses wade chest-deep, and the water temperature holds steady near twenty-four degrees Celsius regardless of season.
Beach riding follows a different rhythm. Morning tides expose firm sand; afternoon swells push water to the vegetation line and erase hoof tracks within minutes. Operators coordinate start times with tide tables published by the Mexican Navy, departing when the strand offers at least thirty meters of rideable width. Riders pass fishing pangas hauled above the surge line, pelicans diving in the shallows, and the occasional sea turtle nest marked with stakes and caution tape. The Jorullo Bridge crossing—a single-lane suspension span over a jungle gorge—anchors the longer Sierra routes, its wooden planks creaking audibly under horse weight and its elevation offering sightlines to both ocean and mountains.
